Bringing The Harp To Children

The Victor Salvi Foundation has a commitment to furthering educational programs and activities designed to introduce children and young adults to the harp. The foundation’s collaboration with professional harpists, schools and cultural organizations has resulted in a significant number of worldwide harp workshops and activities including the following:

Harps for schools and not-for-profit organizations

The Victor Salvi Foundation collaborates with schools and other not-for-profit organizations to bring the harp to the attention of children and young adults and to encourage these institutions and organizations to incorporate the harp into their music programs. Foundation sponsors have created customized rental services to facilitate this possibility.

Additionally, the foundation can provide workshops for schools and other educational organizations through "Discovering the Harp," as a means to introduce the harp to new educational and not-for-profit programs.

Discovering The Harp

"Discovering the Harp," first initiated in 2002, is designed to introduce children to the history and sound of the instrument. Through workshops conducted by selected harpists who visit schools and give demonstrations children can begin to learn more about the harp and its beautiful sounds. First introduced in Italy, "Discovering the Harp" has expanded to the United Kingdom and the United States.

Italy

Harpist Paola Odisio, has visited more than 70 schools in the Northern Piedmont region.

United Kingdom

Former Royal Harpist, Catrin Finch, began participating in the program in April 2003. She visited classrooms, including some with special needs children, who were enthusiastic about the instrument. As a result of the success of the program, some of the participating schools later decided to begin using the harp in their music curriculum.

Musical Outreach In Colombia

The continued success of Colombia's vibrant music community depends on the support provided by private entities. The foundation takes a leadership role in locating and raising funds that allow musical programs to be carried out.

Musical education in Colombia is mainly carried out through the National Symphony and Young Orchestras System of Colombia - Batuta and the National Music Plan for Cohabitation. These organizations focus their work on the population's poorer sectors.

The Batuta Program gives more than 30,000 underprivileged children in 19 cities the opportunity to participate in pre-orchestras, string orchestras and full orchestras.

The National Music Plan is active in 400 municipalities in the country and is the umbrella organization for the National Choirs' Program, the National Bands' Program and the Orchestras' Network. More than 50,000 children have been exposed to music through this organization. The program also supports regional teachers who, in most cases, are receiving specialized education for the first time.

The Victor Salvi Foundation opened its Colombian branch in 2005 with the goal of offering the country the resources and tools to help talented young children succeed in their musical endeavors.

The foundation reaches out to Colombian students through "Formando Musica," its musical education program. The program covers the following areas:

Cartagena, International Music Festival
Teacher education
Support of gifted children and youth orchestras
Concert series
Lending instrumnents

Masterclasses and Workshops

Masterclasses

Every year the foundation organizes masterclasses with renowned harp teachers at the Castello di Mombasiglio, in Piasco, Northern Italy. Located in picturesque Piedmont valley, the Castello is a regional landmark and a designated historic site.

Recent classes have included visits from Fabrice Pierre, Elisabeth Fontan-Binoche and Anna Loro.

The foundation also provides support for masterclasses in Colombia, US, United Kingdom, Japan and France.

Workshops

The Victor Salvi Foundation is instrumental in offering workshops to both professional and non-professional individuals interested in the harp. Workshops have included such diverse topics as the technical aspects of the harp, the history of the instrument and its use in different musical genres. The foundation’s popular annual maintenance workshop with William Hornby, provides harpists with the useful tips on properly maintaining their harp.
