Bogotá, Colombia – The 2nd Workshop on the Repair and Maintenance of Stringed Instruments, will feature noted New York luthier, Carlos Arcieri, who will demonstrate his craft to 18 luthiers from various cities throughout Colombia. Luthiers were specially selected for their experience working with musical instruments. The workshop presented by the Salvi Foundation Colombia, with support from the School of Arts and Crafts Santo Domingo and the Batuta Foundation, will be held from June 2 to 7, 2008 at the School of Arts and Crafts Santo Domingo in Bogotá, Colombia.
"Colombian musical instrument makers will have a rare opportunity to learn first hand the art of assessing the quality of stringed instruments, their maintenance and repair at Carlos Arcieri’s workshop," says Julia Salvi, President of Salvi Foundation – Colombia. "We are very fortunate to have Carlos, a master at his craft, share his expertise with us. His workshop will focus on how to preserve these beautiful instruments including, the use of special varnishes and lacquers so important to their care."
Last November, 25 luthiers from cities throughout the country participated in the first workshop offered by Italian harpmakers, Giancarlo Quaranta and Marcello Mittaridonna under the auspices of Salvi Foundation – Colombia.
CARLOS ARCIERI, luthier
Colombian born, Carlos Arcieri, began his career as a luthier while a student of Italian Master Simone Fernando Sacconi at the Rembert Wurlitzer house, a construction and restoration workshop for stringed instruments. Upon the death of his teacher and subsequent closing of the workshop, Mr. Arcieri continued to fulfil the orders of his teacher and mentor. Eventually he opened his own studio in New York City: Arcieri Violin Maker & Restorer. His clients include such well-known artists as cellist Yo-Yo Ma and violinist and violist Pinchas Zuckerman, among others.
Mr. Arcieri is widely recognized as an expert at restoring ancient violins, including famous Stradivarius instruments – the finest and most sought after in the world.
Currently, Mr. Arcieri is the only Colombian member of the L’Entente Internationale des Maitres Luthiers Archetiers et d’Art, a worldwide organization of experts in violin restoration. He is also the youngest founding member of the American Federation of Violin and Bow Makers established in 1980.
