Gold Medal Winner Announced at 7th USA International Harp Competition
Maria Kruschevskaya Wins Gold Medal

On Saturday, July 14th, a crowd of 1200 people flocked to the Musical Arts Center of the Jacobs School of Music to hear the Final Stage of the 7th USA International Harp Competition. For the Final Stage, contestants performed Küne’s Fantasie sur un theme de l’opera Eugene Onegin and Pierné’s Concertuck for Harp and Orchestra, Op. 39. The Indiana University Summer Festival Orchestra, directed by Maestro David Effron, accompanied the three finalists.

At approximately 10 PM, the eight-member USA International Harp Competition Jury announced the winners. Maria Krushevskaya of Russia was named the Gold Medal Winner of the 2007 Competition. Hanako Hirano of Japan won the Silver Medal, and Coline-Marie Orliac of France took the Bronze Medal.

Ms. Krushevskaya received: a custom-made harp, built and donated by Lyon & Healy, valued at fifty-five thousand dollars, debut performances in New York, London and Taipei, a recording contract and an artist management through the Victor Salvi Foundation.

The International Harp Competition Jury awarded the following special prizes:

Maria Krushevskaya received the following three awards: the Jan Jennings Prize for the best Performance of Pierné’s Concertstück for Harp and Orchestra, Op. 39, the Mary L. Ogg Prize for the best performance of Küne’s Fantasie sur un theme de l’opera Eugene Onegin, and the Mary L. Ogg Prize for best performance of Parish Alvars’ Introduction and Variation on Themes from Bellini’s Opera “Norma”.

Hanako Hirano received the Willy Postma Prize for best performance of Krenek’s Sonata for Harp, Op. 150

Coline-Marie Orliac received the Mario Falcao Prize for best performance of Hsu’s Huan.

The Jury also announced the fourth through eight prizes awarded to the Semi-Finalists of the Competition. They received monetary prizes totaling over 25 thousand dollars.

Mai Fukui: Sixth Prize
Reine Takano: Seventh Prize
Angela Dastrup: Eighth Prize

The 7th USA International Harp Competition lasted ten days and brought 31 participants from 13 countries to Bloomington. The next competition is going to take place in July of 2010 at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, Bloomington.
