Israeli Harpist Sivan Magen wins 16th International Harp Competition in Israel

You need to be somewhat of a harp junkie to know the name of Henriette Renie, but she occupies a position in her instrument’s history roughly equivalent to that of Theodor Leschetizky at the piano or Leopold Auer the violin. Renie was a master teacher who held sway for the first half of the 20th century as the ultimate pedagogue. Not only have her methods become the sacred materials of the modern harpist, she was also an active composer for the instrument. In the best performance of the day, Sivan Magen dazzled with her "Ballade Fan tastique After Poe’s ’The Tell-Tale Heart.’"

Even in a recital of highly talented aspirants, this rendition was a distinct cut above. Mr. Magen delivered a dramatically charged, suitably mysterious, and stunningly strong-handed realization. This is a rather old-fashioned work, the kissing cousin of a Lisztian tone poem. There is one particular expansive melody that sticks in the ear and Mr. Magen made the most of it. His tone was superb. Considering his gender, he might be in line for a position with the Vienna Philharmonic.

Cutting Back on Costs, Not Talent
The New York Times - April 15, 2009

"The program was a reminder of the exceptional caliber of musicians supported by the Young Concert Artists series. It began with Glière¹s lushly romantic, amiable concerto, with the excellent harpist Emmanuel Ceysson as soloist. He performed the extravagantly arpeggiated passages with flair and elegantly rendered the solo cadenzas and elaborate ornamentation."

The 20 year old Musician brought the competition to a stunning conclusion. His all-French program played up poetic expressiveness.
Indianapolis Star July 13, 2004

Emmanuel Ceysson, at only 21 a musician of extraordinary powers, looks like joining the ranks of those who are performing a similar emancipatory service for the solo harp . Ceysson chose a broad programme . this last, a descriptive piece based on a gruesome Greek legend, called for techniques that take harp-playing into new realms, with spooky glissandos on a single string and a range of pluckings and slappings designed to evoke the weirdness of a family drama that puts Jerry Springer’s shows in the shade. Ceysson realized its potential, but in many ways did not need such effects to assert either his skill or his musicality

Equally revered as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral performer, Anna Verkholantseva has established herself as one of the most accomplished harpists worldwide. Born in 1973, Ms. Verkholantseva began her harp studies at the Central Music School with Elena Ilyinskaya in Moscow and continued her education at the Moscow Conservatory with the legendary harpist and teacher, Vera Dulova. Since then, Ms. Verkholantseva has been a consistent prizewinner at international competitions including the prestigious First Prize at the First Moscow International Harp Competition. As a result, Ms. Verkholantseva made her international debut recital at London’s Wigmore Hall in 1998, sponsored by the Victor Salvi Foundation.

She later appeared as a soloist with the Symphony Orchestra of Radio Estonia in Talinn, the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra in Vilnius, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, chamber orchestras "The Moscow Soloists", "Musica Viva", the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Vienna etc.

An active chamber music collaborator, Ms. Verkholantseva has performed at the Dесember Nights Festival at the Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow with the renowned violist Yuri Bashmet, with whom she also performed the world premiere of Valeri Kikta’s "Sonata for Viola and Harp" in 2003.

Other highlights include critically acclaimed performances with violinist Alexander Trostiansky in London’s Covent Garden in Italy and a tour of the United States (in New-York’s Carnegie Weill Recital Hall, Chicago’s Symphony Hall and San Francisco’s Herbst Theatre) sponsored by the Victor Salvi Foundation during the 2000-2001 season.

Ms. Verkholantseva has performed at the opening concerts of the World Harp Congress in Prague (1999) and Geneva (2002). " … There is no doubt that Verkholantseva binds with the harp a lot of her intimate emotions. Her pulse of a modern, ambitious, energetic personality of the youthful range doesn’t sink as she appears at this parlor saloon instrument … "
Harper’s Bazaar, Moscow, April 1998

" … Combining faultless tavhnique with her own poetic nature and charm, she extracts a level of sound and beauty from the instrument that leaves audiences astonished … "
The Moscow Times, June, 1999

" … Two Russians, harpist Anna Verkholantseva and violonist Alexandre Trostianski, performed the work by Thomas Rajna. Verkholantseva, the young prizewinner of the 1997 International Moscow Harp Competition, is regarded as one of the top harpists in the world … "
Monday Newspaper, Cape Town, September, 1999

"Considering that the balance of violin and harp duos leave the impression of a harpist trying feverishly to cover a piano score, the A&R folks at Eganrecords made two brainy davisions with regard to a violin and harp disc. First, they included only works written for that instrumentation, shunning the usual transcriptions. Savond, they found a violin and harp duo that can flat-out play. The two young Russians Trostiansky and Verkholantseva are equally brilliant, displaying a near-perfavt balance of jaw-dropping tavhnique, heartfelt expressions, and flawless ensemble. With a musical maturity that belies their years, these two make the disc’s program sound natural, unforced, and refined.

The duo’s familiarity with each other comes as no great surprise: they performed the premiere of two of the four piaves on the disc at the 1999 World Harp Congress in Prague. These two piaves, one by Ukranian composer Valeri Kikta and the other by Hungarian Thomas Rajna, are written in a way which embraces the unorthodox nature of the violin and harp ensemble, instead of attempting to obscure it. What really makes these two piaves work, however, are the dazzling performances of Trostiansky and Verkholantseva. Trostiansky’s violin acts as an extension of his voice, with flawless intonation and a rich sound that both soars and simmers when either timbre is called for. Verkholantseva plays in much the same way, with a keen sense of drama and expression. These two player’s performances are thoroughly convincing, espavially on the Kikta and Rajna works they know so well.

The Kikta Sonata explores rich harmonies and varied colors but is substantive enough to satisfy the chamber music devotee. Rajna’s Suite is perhaps a bit more transparent, but its well-conceived structure and interesting, tuneful quality are more than enough to make this a fitting finisher for the disc. Both piaves are worthy additions to the repertoire. In perhaps the ultimate compliment to the purist, the strikingly natural tavhnique displayed here-espavially by harpist Verkholantseva-prompts favorable comparisons to the best violin and piano duos.

Rounding out the disc are a few chestnuts by Rossini and Saint-Saens, also well.played and roundly enjoyable. But harpists will find the most interest in the two new works, expertly composed and thrillingly performed. This isn’t just another harp ravord; this is chamber music at its best, with two young stars providing some serious fireworks."

...Brown waving hair, a friendly and serene face, white arms like snow: Anneleen Lenaerts is not like another girl of her age. The harmony that she produces touches everyone directly. It’s by her smile, when she talks to her teacher or the public who comes to congratulate her, that she has this same serenity. Even more when she sits at her harp! Behind, or rather around it, as if she encloses it in her arms. Anneleen Lenaerts plays her instrument as if it was the ,prologement’ of her own body. Philanthropic Activities

In addition to her professional career Catrin is dedicated to providing school children an opportunity to experience classical music. She believes experiencing live music at an early age helped to shape her musical career, and wants all children to be given the same opportunity. She launched "Classic Kids’ Campaign, supported by Salvi Harps, to help children and young people enjoy classical music. This includes tours of schools throughout England and Wales (and in the U.S. when she is on tour there) bringing the harp and classical music into the classroom. It also provides free tickets for young children to some of her concerts.

She is also deeply committed to the Beacon of Hope Charity of which she is a patron. A Mid-Wales charity, the Beacon of Hope provides immediate support and comfort for families dealing with life-limiting and terminal illnesses. Catrin helps raise awareness of the charity and its objectives in Wales, and supports their fundraising efforts. She recently became an Ambassador for the Institute of Cancer Research through her involvement with the Beacon of Hope Charity.

Having a great love for Thailand, Catrin helped establish the Harp School in Bangkok. After the Tsunami disaster which hit Thailand in 2005, she organized a tsunami appeal concert in a small chapel near her home outside Cardiff. She was joined by other artists including Sian Cothi, Ryland Teifi, Celticana and the Serendipity Choir in an effort to raise money for the relief effort.

Biography

Born into a family of musicians, Gwyneth Wentink was introduced to music while in the womb. At the age of five she began playing the harp, making her debut three years later with the Netherlands National Youth Orchestra in a performance of Mozart's "Concerto for Flute and Harp." At the age of ten she performed for Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands.

Since she was eleven years old, Ms. Wentink has received many top prizes for her musical performances including awards from The Young Music Talent Foundation and The Princess Christina Concours, both in the Netherlands; the International Nippon Harp Competition in Tokyo and the Torneo Internazionale di Musica Competition in Rome.

In 1998, she won the prestigious International Harp Contest in Israel, where she became the youngest contestant ever to be awarded First Prize. She was also awarded the special Gulbenkian Prize for the best performance of Shafer's "Concerto for Harp and Orchestra." In 1999, she won the First Prize at the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in New York at the age of seventeen. She is the first solo harpist ever to be awarded this distinction in the forty-year history of YCA. She has been awarded the Beracasa Foundation Prize, the Mortimer Levitt Career Development Award, the Aaron and Irene Diamond Soloist Prize (2000), the Richard Hall Foundation Prize (2001) and the Netherlands-American Foundation Prize (2002).

She made her recital debuts in 1999 at both the Wigmore Hall in London and the Merkin Hall in New York City. Both concerts were presented by the Victor Salvi Foundation. In March 2002, Ms. Wentink performed at New York City's Carnegie Hall. She also performed with the world renowned flutist, Eugenia Zuckerman, at the Morgan Library in New York City.

Gwyneth Wentink's critically acclaimed debut CD was released under the Egan Records label. Her latest CD, "Rodrigo: Concierto Serenata/Concierto de Aranjuez (Complete Orchestral Works, Vol. 9)" was released in the fall of 2006 on the Naxos label.

The Boston Intelligencer 24-04-2010 Discoveries with Boston Philharmonic.Wentink Soars
There was a lot to discover at Boston Philharmonic’s "Discovery" concert Thursday night, April 22 at Sanders Theatre – Gwyneth Wentink, for one. She is an angel. Her harp took wings in one of very few concertos featuring the instrument, soaring away to breathless heights in Harp Concerto by Alberto Ginastera. Over three movements and a cadenza, all shaped as a continuous and inviting whole, she and her harp took flight into fearfulness and alarm, wonder and marvel, and into the beyond.

"My Salvi harp," she says in a full-page ad appearing in the program booklet, "gives me the possibility to express myself the way I want. It is unique in its richness of sound and colors and is a true inspiration." Together, she and her Salvi found opportunities galore in the Argentinean composer’s multihued score that includes some 34 percussion instruments with the harp briefly becoming the 35th in the first movement, where she was called upon to tap out a rhythm with both hands on the harp’s sounding board.

To what extent she could vary the sound of the harp’s strings could be a study in and of itself. There were fleshy, warm, sustained utterances, chilling, rattling strums from fingernails flat against the strings, feathery glissandi and forcefully plucked strings in rapid arpeggios. But back to where she took us in the Ginastera.

Only the audience’s slightest shuffling about could be heard during the pauses between movements, so wrapped up it apparently was in this magnetic performance by the young and gifted Dutch musician. Balance of harp and orchestra, you think, might have been a problem? Hard to believe, but maybe a handful of the harp’s notes could be seen and not heard. Both Gwyneth Wentink and Boston Philharmonic penetrated profoundly into the unusual space of this improbable concerto, both running away with its uncommon personal and mystical folkloric bent.

How lucky! It turns out that soloist Wentink drove from Amsterdam to Madrid, a two-day trip, in order to catch a plane to Boston, this due, of course, to Iceland’s volcano interfering with air travel in Europe.

NRC Wentink is een harpheldin

Concert: Brussels Philharmonic – het Vlaams Radio Orkest o.l.v. Uri Segal, m.m.v. harpistes Gwyneth Wentink, Isabelle Perrin & Isabelle Moretti. Gehoord: 18/7 Concertgebouw Amsterdam.

Oswin Schneeweisz

"Gwyneth Wentink is a splendid harpist with a virtuoso's flair and technique. She knows how to exploit every resource of her instrument, tossing off delicate rippling arpeggios, furious cascades, whirlwind runs and remarkably sonorous, ringing harmonics, and she commands a truly amazing range of dynamics colors and nuances. The enthusiastic audience was rewarded with a brilliant encore."
New York Concert Review

"Gwyneth Wentink has an incredible technique which is always in service of the music. From the first notes on it became clear that this young woman also touches the strings of the human soul."
YCA New York

Bach, Faur of 20ste eeuws werk betrof.

Szarvas

"Gwyneth Wentink has an incredible technique which is always in service of the music. From the first notes on it became clear that this 17-year-old woman also touches the strings of the human soul."
Altena News (The Netherlands)

"A shy girl, she smiles a bit awkwardly when she comes on stage, sits at the instrument, and takes a few seconds to concentrate. In that short time, her face changes - the girl becomes an artist. Then she plays and the strings thunder, whistle, sing. Colors change from tinkling bells to murmuring water, from intimate whispering to loud voices. Her fingers dance on the strings in an unearthly fashion, sliding, plucking. The audience was spellbound."
Brabants Daglad (The Netherlands)

"As the Dutch performer unveiled the biggest harp in circulation, the audience gasped in wonder. When she struck the first note, a hush fell over the store. Her hands moved gracefully across the 47 strings, her deep blue eyes darted from the notes to the strings, and her feet moved the pedals with a deftness that had to be seen to be believed. ."

RODRIGO: Concierto serenata / Concierto de Aranjuez (Complete Orchestral Works, Vol. 9)

Dedicated to the celebrated harpist and Rodrigos fellow countryman and friend Nicanor Zabaleta, the lovely Concierto serenata from 1952 reflects the glories of Spanish music of the past. Sones en la Giralda (Fantasa Sevillana), dedicated to another famous Spanish harpist, Marisa Robles, evokes the spirit of Seville with its traditional Flamenco rhythms and fiery orchestral accompaniment. The most famous guitar work of the 20th century, Concierto de Aranjuez, was transcribed by the composer for Zabaleta in 1974.

Press / Reviews

"Letizia enchanted the jury at the Israel Competition with her formidable technique and control, musicianship and spiritual presence…"
di Armando Caruso - La Stampa 18 November 2001

"Unquestionably Letizia Belmondo was last Sunday’s star musician and harpist: the range of her skills and playing, her expressiveness, all blended into pieces one sadly does not often have the pleasure of enjoying."
Renaissance Lochoise - 10 October 2002

"Easy flowing grace notes, delicate phrasing and exquisite play, ravishing ease, poetry and skill, Letizia Belmondo plays the harp with a wide flowing - quasi dancing - movement. Letizia Belmondo was surrounded by top instrument players, musicians with depth of play: she offered this first audience of the new Sonatas one of those moments of grace where music springs out naturally and spectacularly."
Loches - 10 October 2002

Biography

Praised by critics and audiences alike, nineteen-year-old Varvara Ivanova has already performed in major concert venues in Western Europe, Russia and Israel.

Following her London debut performance in Wigmore Hall with the London Chamber Orchestra conducted by Geoffrey Simon, British critic Edward Johnson wrote: "Ivanova demonstrated that she is a born virtuoso. Her sensitivity, beauty of sound and musicality captured the near-capacity audience … one of the very few harpists who can simultaneously awe and charm." That performance took place in June 2003 and was co-sponsored by the Victor Salvi Foundation and Anglo-Suisse Artistic Foundation.

In November 2003, Ms. Ivanova won first prize at the prestigious International Harp Contest in Israel and received the special award for her performance of Ami Ma’ayani’s "Maqamat."

Varvara Ivanova was born into a family of musicians in Moscow and at the age of five began her studies at the Preparatory of Moscow Conservatory under M.F. Maslennikova. A child prodigy, she had her first major performance of Handel’s "Concerto for Harp and Orchestra B-dur" at the age of seven at the Big Concert Hall of the Moscow Conservatory with the Kremlin Chamber Orchestra.

Throughout her emerging career, Varvara has been awarded major prizes in numerous harp competitions, including First Prize at the Lily Laskine Harp Competition, Junior Division, in France and First Prize at the Vera Dulova Harp Competition in Russia. She has also been awarded a highly-coveted scholarship from the Rostropovich Music Fund.

In November 2001, Ms. Ivanova replaced Xavier de Maistre, Principal Harpist of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, on one week notice, as a soloist with the Kremlin Chamber Orchestra on tour in Germany and performed to critical acclaim in Dusseldorf Tonhalle, Hamburg Musikhalle, Munich Prinzregententheater and Frankfurt Alte Oper. A year later, she was a featured soloist at the World Harp Congress in Geneva, Switzerland.

Varvara Ivanova has also performed as a soloist with other prestigious orchestras, including the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra, Primo Allegro Chamber Orchestra and the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra.

Ms. Ivanova is currently studying in the class of E.A. Moskvitina, while keeping a busy performing schedule. Recently, she performed solo and chamber music on a concert tour in Russia under the auspices of the Rostropovich Music Fund. She was invited to participate in the tour again in June 2005.

In April 2005, Varvara Ivanova gave her New York debut recital at the Merkin Hall and her Chicago debut recital in the newly completed Lyon & Healy Hall in conjunction with the Victor Salvi Foundation.

Ms. Ivanova participated in the festival, "Harp Art in Russia," (December, 2005 and April 2006). In May, 2005 she performed in a solo recital at The International Harp Festival in Beograd and in July, she performed in a concert by the Scholars of the Rostropovich Foundation at the 6th G.A. Papaioannou Classical Music Festival (Kavala, Greece). In September, Varvara took part in a concert in honor of the 15th anniversary of the revival of the temple, "The Big Rise" (Moscow) and in October she performed in the Giovani Virtuosi Dell’Arpa Series, sponsored by the Victor Salvi Foundation, at the Museo Dell’Arpa Victor Salvi (Piasco, Italy).

She is continuing her masterclasses with maestro M. Rostropoich, professor of Moscow Conservatory Daniil Kopilov (piano) and with professor of the Academy of Choral Art, musicologist, musical critic, Dmitry Zotov (piano). Varvara continues to perform in concerts presented by the Rostropovich Foundation.

… Salt Lake part of harpist’s US debut… "It's not often that harpists get as much notice as Ivanova has in the past two years. But with her virtuosity and technique, the young Russian is poised to take the musical world by storm."

"She is an outstanding harpist and is already able to perform in all the world demonstrating precise knowledge of her instrument and enormous talent."
Maestro Mstislav Rostropovich, September 2004

"During the seven years that I have witnessed Varvara’s growth … she has become a wonderful musician and a real master of her instrument. Varvara’s dedication to her craft is exemplary, and she never fails to win the hearts and minds of those who are exposed to her talents."
Michael Rachlevsky, Music Director, Kremlin Chamber Orchestra - after joint performances in Germany, December 2001

"Ivanova demonstrated that she is a born virtuoso. Her sensitivity, beauty of sound and musicality captured a near-capacity audience … one of the very few harpists who can simultaneously awe and charm."
Edward Johnson, renowned English critic - of her debut performance at Wigmore Hall 2003 with London Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Geoffrey Simon

"Varvara displayed the opulent and boundless capacity of this exquisite instrument."
Valery Ivanov, Samarian News, Russia, June 2004 - after concert presented by the Rostropovich Music Foundation

What to do when a piece you want to play isn’t written for your instrument? If you’re Varvara Ivanova, you transcribe it. The 17-year-old harpist dazzled her Libby Gardner Concert Hall audience - which included a high contingent of young girls - on Friday with a varied program consisting largely of her own arrangements of keyboard classics. Ivanova led off with Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, showing off her speed and accuracy right away. The fugue section featured especially deft voice leading. A prelude from Bach’s "Well-Tempered Clavier," a Brahms intermezzo and a pair of Chopin waltzes let the teen harpist, who made her New York recital debut earlier this week, show other facets of her musicianship. Her interpretation of Chopin’s "Fantaisie Impromptu" was particularly expressive and featured some fast footwork on the harp’s pedals as a bonus. Ravel’s "Jeux d’eau," originally for piano, was an inspired choice for a harp transcription; Ivanova’s sparkling technique made it easy to visualize the fountain suggested in the title. Tchaikovsky’s "Dumka," by contrast, was a dark, rich-toned rendition of a folk tune. (The Tchaikovsky piece also featured a speedy repair of a popped string by ShruDeLi Ownbey, organizer of the Victor Salvi Foundation-sponsored International Harp Concert Series.) Some works on the program, of course, were written originally for harp. Marcel Tournier’s Op. 30 Sonatine let Ivanova demonstrate strength as well as delicate finger work. Two sets of variations on a theme provided the evening’s biggest crowd-pleasers. Ivanova and the audience had fun with Wilhelm Posse’s light-hearted, virtuosic arrangement of "Carnival of Venice" and Mikhail Mtchedelov’s bravura variations on Paganini’s 24th Violin Caprice. Ivanova encored with a stunning performance of Liszt’s "Liebestraum."

2007 Performances

In 2007, Catrin made her first trip to Japan where she made her debut at the Nikkei Hall in Tokyo to a full house, followed by another full house at the Hyogo Metropolitan Arts Centre in Osaka.  She recorded a TV program for NHK-TV, the BBC of Japan.

During the concert in Tokyo Catrin played on the Salvi harp originally made for the Empress of Japan, who attended one of her rehearsals.  According to Catrin, she has now played on all the "Royal" harps she knows about -- those made for the HRH The Prince of Wales, the King of Thailand and the Empress of Japan.

Her newest CD,"Little Angels, (Angyliion Bach" in Welch) offers a collection of lullaby’s from around the world.  It was recorded together with her mother-in-law and fellow harpist, Elinor Bennett and produced by her husband and her new daughter's father, Hywel Wigley.  It was released on Hywel's Kissan label.  The album features several arrangements of well-known traditional melodies by both harpists.

In addition, Catrin performed with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Theatre Brycheiniog, Canal Wharf, Brecon; St David's Day Gala Concert in support of Cancer Research Wales; performed with the Froncysyllte male Voice Choir in their 60th anniversary year William Aston Hall, Wrexham; performed with the Parc and Dare Band and Electric Brass at various venues throughout Wales; and with Elinor Bennett at Oriel Plas Glyn-Y-Weddw Arts Centre, Llanbedrog, Pwllheli.

On April 25th, Catrin's Band, CF47 made its debut at St David’s Hall in Cardiff.  She also performed at the Ruthin Castle Hotel Festival, Ruthin and in the chamber music series at the Spoleto Festival Charleston SC, USA and the Southwell Festival (Southwell, Nottinghamshire).  Catrin was also a featured harpist at the European Harp Symposium in Cardiff
